When we think about Hip Hop DJ’s, we envision the elements that make up said title. We imagine a talented artist behind two turn tables, in a crowded venue, spinning songs that make up the culture which we have witnessed evolve these past four decades. We picture DJ Heron.
It would be cliché if this piece began with tell tales of DJ Heron’s upbringing during a time when Hip Hop was merely an embryo in the now multi-billion-dollar industry, or by overconfidently assuring the reader of just how dope DJ Heron is. So instead, let’s just spew out the facts; this man has opened up for so many of Hip Hop’s prominent acts. And if that’s not enough, DJ Heron is responsible for the infamous yearly tribute weekend to one of Hip Hop’s most impactful producers and rappers of our generation; Slum Village group member, James Dewitt Yancy, better known as J Dilla. Yet and still, DJ Heron’s boast list doesn’t end there. He has DJ’d for a long list of artists and has closely worked on projects with one which he calls his mentor, DJ Maseo of De La Soul. Other acts include:
Jungle BrothersSpecial Ed
Miami’s own DJ EFN
Sugar Hill Gang
NORE and EFN (Drink Champs Pod Cast Phenomenon)
DJ Stretch Armstrong
DJ Kid Capri
He recently debuted as a guest DJ at the infamous Toca Tuesdays at the popular Club Cielo in the Meat Packing District alongside DJ Tony Touch and Kool DJ Red Alert. His skills and reputable talent packed up Miami’s infamous Side Bar with a sold-out crowd of 900 plus hip hop heads the first week of February, 2017 when he invited his friends Hip Hop’s own Bone Thugs and Harmony to perform alongside his set. A night to remember indeed.
DJ Heron has provided beats for signature acts and has assisted with artist development for major labels like Sony/BMG. He continues to produce and provide his DJ services globally packing in oversized venues in major cities alike.
In this day and age when DJ’s are a hit or miss, DJ Heron is hands down, a sure shot.
